The Health Consequences of Obesity

There are many consequences associated with obesity, the problems include coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Obesity is also a known risk factor for some types of cancer. It is more likely for obese men to die from forms of cancer such as colon, rectum and prostate. Many obese women may get gallbladder, breast, cervix, ovalry and uterine cancers.
There are many other health problems that are linked to being obese. Many obese people will experience gall bladder disease and gallstones. Osteoarthritis is another health problem that obese people may experience, the excess weight on the joints cause the joints to deteriorate to produce this problem. Gout can occur also from the deposit of uric acid crystals that get into the joints. Sleep apnea is another dangerous disorder that causes the sufferer to stop breathing during sleep and has a characteristic of loud snoring.

There are also some serious psychological and social problems because of low self esteem in the obese person. Diabetes is the top illness associated with diabetes and it cause even greater chances of kidney diseases.


One of the most uncomfortable aspects of obesity is the emotional pain that the person experiences. The obese person may feel feelings of inadequacies and may feel unattractive. Because society sees them as lazy and gluttonous, they begin to see themselves in the same light. The obese person may face the prejudice and discrimination in the work place, in school setting and in many social situations. It causes them to feel intense feelings of rejection, shame and depression. There are some organizations that are trying to reach those that are obese through teaching about the illness, and supporting those who are obese in an effort to allow them to express themselves through self empowerment.

Some health care programs also provide obese individuals with the resources to get into exercise programs. In these programs they are taught the proper way to exercise in order to lose weigh in a healthy way. The program will allow the person to see their on staff nutritionist, with whom will design a diet to slowly lose the weight through healthy lifestyle choices, teaching them recipes and shopping techniques to buying and preparing healthy foods and how to monitor caloric intakes. This program may even have therapists available to assist the obese person in finding self worth and getting them into a positive state of mind in order to succeed in social situations.
