What is Noni and why do people use it?

Noni is a flowering shrub found mainly in Pacific Islands, Australasia – Asia and Australia – and Polynesia. Its oval shaped dark green leaves distinguish it from other shrubs. Noni plants grow up to a height of 10 feet. When the flowers ripen out, they mature into fruit berries, which are yellow in color, and have a very strong smell.
Juices drawn or extracted from Noni fruit have medicinal value. Though the juice may not be palatable for many, most of the companies who now cater to herbal or organic cure centers market Noni juice in different flavors with some non-toxic sugar or sweeteners added to it. Some suppliers even specialize in concentrates of Noni juice which when diluted with water can be consumed as per instructions.
The only problem with this Noni juice is its unpleasant smell and unsavory taste. Fruit of last resort is what it is called in many places and that describes its unpleasant features.
Since preserving Noni juice may not be feasible in some tropical and other climates, also available in drug stores and nature food shops are capsules and tablets of Noni juice. It is not only the juice but also many tribes and societies even use oval shaped green leaves for healing of open wounds, abrasions and cuts.
Scientific investigations have affirmed that Noni juice is rich in vitamins, minerals and natural anti-oxidants. It is why sometime Noni juice is considered an excellent recipe for preventing aging.

Botanically, this flowering shrub is identified as morinda citrifolia but in local parlance, Noni is also known as Mengkudu.

There are traditions in many pacific Islands and pockets of Asian and Australian continents where Noni is considered a reliable treatment for indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, boils in the bucco pharyngeal cavity, rashes and other skin disorders. Many recommend Noni juice for arthritis and various body infections, including those of the bladder, eyes, and colds. It is also taken for curing bone fractures, fatigue, gastric ulcers, boils, bowel movement and burns.
When tried on animals in research laboratories, scientists found that juice was rich in natural substances that are of help in treatment of cancer, pain besides revitalizing the human immune system. The research, however, has not given sufficient evidence to suggest that in Noni juice taken in big quantities would be safe for humans.  You name an ailment and some section of Noni juice may be useful curing that disorder.
True, there are still no known side effects of Noni juice. Pregnant women and nursing women should avoid it. Those with kidney and liver ailments should also avoid using Noni juice, as it is rich in Potassium.
