Besides Atkins, another popular diet schedule popular with those trying to lose extra pounds has been Zone Diet, a brainchild of Barry Sears. Barry Sears advocates for a good balanced diet to have 40 per cent carbohydrates, 30 per cent proteins and the remaining 30 per cent fats.

Basic thought process behind Barry Sears’ revolutionary diet is the changing dietary habits of the humans since their evolution. He argues that medieval man depended heavily on meats for his or her survival. But the evolution process has gradually lowered his dependence on meat and meat products and instead encouraged him to take other form of foods that are equally rich in carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

The carbohydrates content has been increasing.  If the average human being tended to put on extra pounds it was because of starch rich foods like potatoes, rice, white bread and pasta had found increased place in our meals. Starches are the one that leave tell tale signs behind in form of thick deposits.



Barry Sears, however, advocates that one must return to our medieval diet in principle. He suggests that meats, fruit and vegetables as were taken by ancestors comprised a good or balanced diet that met all body requirements.

Though Barry Sear’s Zone diet does not at any stage stops or prevents you from taking any diet in particular, all it emphasizes is the right blend of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Zone diet would be recommended lesser and lesser of starches like rice, potatoes, pasta on your plate and more of fruits, vegetables and even meats.

It is the body hormone insulin which if secreted in excess leads to deposits of fats in the body. Thus these are insulin-induced fats that make you obese. If you are able to maintain a good blood-sugar ratio, your system will remain apt enough to burn extra fats. If you are able to maintain blood-sugar level and regulate insulin secretion, your chances of contacting heart disease or diabetes are minimized.

Do you know some of the top celebrities like Madonna, Demi Moore and Jennifer Aniston also follow Zone Diet? But still critics feel that zone diet does not show satisfactory results on long-term basis. They also feel that restricting certain ingredients may not be in the interest of the body at large. Some researchers also contest the postulate that insulin is indirectly connected to weight gain.
